I went on a Saturday afternoon in December and the line was out the door all the way to the red picket fence. It’s obvious they expect long lines and crowds, as they thoughtfully put a menu board with a request you figure out what to order before you get close to the counter inside.

Everything about this place was just the picture perfect holiday spot. The building is red, the scent from the evergreen Christmas trees for sale displayed, the lights on the building. AND to make it even more perfect, there was a beautiful miniature pony out front. After chatting with his owner, I found out he makes visits there often and gives rides to children. He was so sweet and having a great time munching on straw when he had a break.

Fun Fact:

Finnish people drink more coffee than any other country in the world. That's why Helsinki's coffee culture runs deep—and Café Regatta is one of the best cafés in Helsinki for experiencing it authentically.

The weather was warmer than usual, but still winter, so people were bundled up and some even gathered around the firepit to roast reindeer hot dogs or marshmallows purchased at the cafe. No bringing outside items to grill your own. But if you’re into an old fashioned outdoorsy snack, this is your place.

I waited about 15 minutes in line on a Saturday afternoon. Worth it for your list of things to do in Helsinki? Absolutely. I ordered the hot chocolate (€5.50) and it arrived in a festive red recyclable cup with a mountain of whipped cream so tall I had to photograph it before taking the first sip. Spectacular and delicious.

The pony outside Café Regatta was an unexpected holiday touch.

These are the things you find when you finally stop postponing and start exploring

There are many chairs and tables outside next to the water. I picked one right next to it but not too far from the pony! It was a delight in every way. I even got to see a few people go “ice swimming” across the lake…more in another post about that and the sauna culture later.
